The Engineering Council maintains a national registry of over 228,000 engineering technicians (EngTech), registered engineers (IEng), chartered engineers (CEng), and information and communications technology technicians (ICTTech).

UK law is generally lenient; therefore, the title “engineer” is not legally protected, and anyone can call themselves an engineer, professional engineer, or registered engineer. This title is also used in many semi-skilled and unskilled trades. However, the “professional” titles awarded by the Engineering Council are legally protected. Registration as a chartered engineer or engineering technician is voluntary, and applicants must demonstrate a high level of professional competence acquired through education, training, and relevant experience. Registration is divided into four categories:
